Creative Tools Hand Picked by this Spring's Local Seattle Featured Créatives

  1. Ashwini’s Color Mixing Wheel

My favorite creative tool is a Color mixing guide that visually illustrates relationships between colors and demonstrates the results. I always have one handy anywhere I go and also recommend to all my students to help them learn the color theory in a fun way.

2. Kelly Lyles’ GOLDEN Acrylic Glazing Liquid

I find oil painting easiest, in that it’s the most forgiving. But I like fast results, and hate the messy cleanup, so I get lazy and usually stick with acrylics (except in human-vs pets- portraiture, for that I love the depth and layering of oils. But Acrylic glazing liquid allows for layering, and helps with translucent shadows. I also love the OPENS (made by GOLDEN), slow-drying acrylic paint that’s a happy interim between acrylic and oils. A trick is using the OPEN white, since we often add white to other colors to lighten/soften, that little bit of OPEN in the mix slows all the drying.

3.

Alexander Sylvester’s Tracing Lightbox

A simple lightbox might be one of my favorite tools (outside my primary medium, colored pencils) primarily because I do a lot of line work in my art, and the lightbox is a great solution for traditional artists looking to trace a draft without having to start all the way over. It’s a huge timesaver.
